FUND A NEED - walk to learn

Over the past 5 years, 2012-2017, Prestwood has honed the Walk To Read Program for its students. This reading intervention program has worked to provide every student specialized reading instruction at his or her level whether advanced, remedial or somewhere in between.

At last year’s Benefit Ball, we took a bold step forward and introduced our Walk to Learn program for students in grades 2-5. We were also able to continue to fund the Walk to Read program for our youngest (K/1) students.

Walk to Learn continues with specialized reading, but has expanded to include student choice and in-depth, enriching and varied learning experiences for the students in the areas of math, science and the arts.

Can’t attend this event this year? There is still a way to support our program, please click here to make a donation of your choice.

One four-week cycle focuses on literacy in classes which include creative writing, literature circles, science texts and journalism. It may include classes such as algebra, coding and scientific experiments. The final cycle is enrichment with classes such as maker lab, community service, and yearbook. Most students will spend four weeks in each domain.

Without the monies raised by the Fund a Need at last year’s Benefit Ball both of these programs would not exist.

Why do we feel these programs are so crucial? There are 3 reasons:

  1. Walk to Learn and Walk to Read provide differentiation for all students to be challenged at their level.

  2. Walk to Learn also provides and element of choice to engage students in their learning.

  3. Walk to Learn and Walk to Read are systematic intervention programs needed by our struggling students.

This year, our Fund a Need will again support and work to expand Walk To Learn. Let’s fund Walk to Learn 2.0!

This program is instrumental and staff has confidently said that they believe it has been the right decision for Walk to Read to grow as Walk to Learn.

Students, teachers and parents have all shared how they benefit from the program and we agree that it should continue and improve. These funds will allow the program to hire specialists, aides and fund materials needed for the program.

Even if you cannot attend the Benefit Ball there is still a way to fund Walk to Learn 2.0!

Please click below to make a donation of your choice. Any amount is appreciated and goes toward continuing our support of this amazing program!
